I ALWAYS do research on fish before buying them, but I went on an assumption and didn't do proper research before acquiring a Catalina Goby. I assumed that they required the same care as other gobies, but upon doing research found that they are colder water. I don't know what to do. Should I bring it back to the LFS? Any guidance is appreciated.

I would take it back. If you don't it will die. Unless, you are going to keep a coldwater tank. Does your lfs have a coldwater tank?

I don't believe they knew. They were selling it out of the same system as all sorts of tropical fish. They were in the same wall of miniature tanks as green bands, watchmen, and all sorts of tropical fish and inverts. All of the water from all those tanks cycles through the same filtration. If I can find and catch the little guy I'll take him back ASAP and tell them that its a coldwater species. I feel like an idiot. I should have known not to buy on an assumption.

Maybe I'll set up a 5-10 gallon coldwater setup for it to have to itself

Hate to say it, but that was what I was thinking. If you take it back, it sounds like it's going to die anyway. Might be a cool thing. Ten gallon nanos rock and they're not that hard to keep. And pretty cheap. No skimmer necessary. Just a 14W standard bulb. A few inches of sand and some rock. Piece of cake. Don't know of anyone on the forums right off the top of my head with a coldwater setup. Would be neat to watch.

I think I could probably pull it off without a chiller running it at about 65-70. Might just try to pull this off.

Some fish just should not be sold in the hobby. I mean how many people keep a cold water tank? That's rediculous and I would bring it back and look pissed about it and you should be able to get full retail credit. Give em hell!

In a suburb of Boston. No deserts around. It can get pretty hot, but I have AC for those days. Inside the house it seldom brakes 70.
