i want to start a refugium for my 14gal biocube? I have read all the buzz about removing the bioballs from the second chamber and replacing them with Cheato and Macro Algae. This souncs like a very sketchy process to me. What if you remove to many bioballs at once and your tank crashes or gets thrown into another cycle.:-[
So what i have brainstormed is using a CPR Pico tank for a fuge! Set right next to the main DT (14gal biocube). Setting this 3 gallon pico up with lots of LR and Live Sand and maybe some Macro, would assure me that there is plenty of Biological filtration to safely remove the bioballs, slowly in four increments while doing waterchanges. Then if i choose to, i could make the back, second chamber into a Built in refugium, while lessening the impact to the tank. I will not be increasing the bio load during this time either. I think this will work but i have some questions.

    1. Will using a standard U tube perform well enough to get water from the main tank to the refugium? Ive seen a couple people use these without an overflow box with success?

I would like to set up something similar to this!

    2. I have plenty of LR to fill the Pico tank. What else if anything should i put in the Pico Refugium?

    3. How long should i let this whole new system run before removing the bioballs?

Im sure ill have more questions later, but for now clearing these ones up would be greatly appreciated!!!;)

You don't need to set anything up. Just slowly remove the bioballs over a couple of weeks and the population will grow else where.

Heck, with 3 hand fulls, remove one ball a day. That should do it.
