The 2 times I had to start up my eshopps overflow, I had to give it a few tries to get the water flowing 100% thru the U tube.

Todd's suggestion with the air hose and sucking the air out is what I did. It took 2/3 tries, but eventually got it and it does make a difference. That airbubble is acting like a pinch point and slowing down your flow.

The portion in the tank? No it has a couple inches of water. at all times. I've tried getting the bubble out, but it just comes right back.

return is 3/4" and overflow is 1". The ball valve is located on the return line, about 12" below the output nozzle.

Yeah, I used to keep a piece of hose in it to suck out periodically as the bubble always comes back. I recently put a back of carbon in the overflow, IDK if that will act in the same way. The overflow pipe is 1"The far chamaber of the overflow (drain) will maintain maybe 1/2" of water in it with the stockman pipe out.

I used to keep a hose it it. Air keeps coming back for some reason.

My guess is more water inside the overflow box is needed. If you see 2 inches of water with slow flow and air bubble in there, then initially when it starts running and flow is much faster it empties the box and air gets in there. Try letting some more water into the tank and see if you can keep it without air bubbles for a little while to improve flow.

Water rises to the point of sloshing out when I do that.

I am not suggesting you open it up fully, but try giving it more so the box is more full, an then remove the air bubble from the tube and see if it comes back.

    Along that same note,
Like I said, air should not be getting in to the U tube.

Try lowering the inner box a 1/4 inch maybe too. Once you get the air out, it should keep it out.
Are you running a wave maker of some type? These also kind of mess up the flow to the inner box some.

Try this and get back to us.

one thing I haven't seen discussed is hose size.... if your hose leaving the overflow is too small, you will have a back up and have trouble clearing the water from the tube.. normally the supply ( to the sump) will be the next size larger than the return ( to the display tank).. just throwing it out there..
