LEDs are awesome, but with your budget in mind, I would look at T5 lighting like you originally planned. As you can see from the answers you've got so far, LEDs are in a bit of a craze right now which means a lot of people are converting. This also means that a lot of people are getting rid of their older lights, and you should be able to find a killer deal on Craigslist. Look for a decent quality four bulb T5 fixture, and be sure to talk them down if the bulbs are any older than two months.

His tank is four feet long. He would need two of those for good coverage, but his budget is only enough for one of those.

    Check these out:

The bulbs aren't the best, but they could at least get you going while you get your feet wet in the coral side of things.

If you do not plan on corals yet, you could start with one, and grow corals in the center of the tank, then buy another when you are ready. The odysea t-5 were what I used on my old frag tank. They are good, but you will need new bulbs.

Thanks Rawdogz for pointing me in the right direction about the LEDs. I've been reading what others have to say and it looks like thats the way to go.

I have one over my 75 and it works fine. They are super bright. And the odyssea t5 i just took of was a horrendous color and could barley grown gsp! with new bulbs it would be better but is really not a good fixture.

I have an Aquaticlife 48" 4-lamps T5 with ATI bulbs. I have this T5 for about three months and still has factory warranty until May 2013. Let me know if you are interesting.

Not EVERYONE is using LED's :) I personally love my T5HO's. My Corals/fish/inverts and clam are all thriving and have been for the 1+ year I've been running them. :)

yea but, your not going to find a GOOD t5 fixture with GOOD bulbs for the price of the reefbreeders led light.

Here is a pic of my 75! gal tank, blues are at about 50% all white+red+green+uv are at about 20-30%
