nope- no heater needed for this tank- the pumps and such keep it at 79 degrees. I run carbon and GFO in the fluval 304.

but I am betting the lights heated the tank (which was 89 degrees at this time) when I found this problem.

I am hoping my large finger leather will come back- I have him in a 10 gallon presently, but he isnt doing so well.

If any of you have any ideas on how to maybe save him, I sure would appreciate it.

Alpha03 - sorry to be reading this thread
its horrible when we lose 1 piece, and multi losses can be devastating

can you get some images up of the corals with the issues?

you seem to be doing the right things, so its a waiting game now IMHO

if your running carbon on the 10, and have adequate flow ( as Im sure it will want to shed skin pretty soon after the experience) then IMHO, your on the right track for saving them

no healthy coral would be killed by a simple malfunction with the lighting timer. i went on vacation a while back and my timer tripped and my 250 watt halides over my 16 gallon tank were on for 3 days straight only 10 inches above the tank and i didnt lose anything. in fact got some growth from the corals.

I will post pic's tomorrow, I need new batteries for the camera (ugg), with tax time and the present weather we have been experienceing I have my hands full right now. I don't think the devils hand will survive- in part, because I havent two things I need to help him do so: one, time, two, knowledge- and this is my fault- it is wearing on me- he was my first coral, 12 years ago, and now I think I have killed him somehow.

Either way, I will learn and move forward- it's all anyone can do.

Thanks for trying to help me out.

Sorry to hear you lost such a mature coral that sucks. Yes, having losses will teach you something, and hopefully it prevents the same thing from happening again. My thoughts are that even when you leave a light on all day and night, the tank will only get as hot as it can get during a short period of the day. So if the high temp of the day is 89, then prior to, and after the high, the temps are going to be lower.

I have 2x400W plus 2 24" reefbrites, and I've left them on for 36 hours, and never saw a problem. What I am getting at, is that I think the corals have been subjected to 89 degree temps before, but never died. So what else could have caused it. I assume that when it happened, it wasn't over 100 degrees, or at least not as hot as it gets in the heat of the summer. So what happens during those times of year, when it's super hot?

Don't leathers do that, where they rot, look like they are dying, shed a layer, and are as good as new. Isn't that a response they get when they are pissed off? I've read about guys having their leather rot away for two weeks, and then come back.

are you sure the corals were dead, leathers in particular look nasty at times when they shed? The elevated temp might have caused them to start shedding. Definately want to run carbon with anytype of leathers.

As far as your other leather in the 10g.....honestly I would have left it in the tank if the paremeters were alright. What happened now is that the tank shot up temp wise and now you transfered it to a much cooler tank, causing more shock. When temps go up, it is best to allow things to go down gradually. When my tank shot up to 98 my first reaction was to move everything over to another tank.....however was directed to allow it to return to a more natural temperature gradually and I think it helped save my favorite coral.

I am so sorry for your loss, hang in there

Dont beat yourself up.......it happens and has happened to all of us. You didnt do anything that killed him, it was an unfortunate chain of events. Give it some time and be patient. Dont do anything rash. Leathers are tough little guys and I bet he will be fine. (You were able to keep him alive for 12 years, much more than many on here! ::)) I hope one day i can say I had a coral for that long!

Definately get some pictures of him so we can see how he looks!
