I have a 100g custom tank currently set up for fresh water, but I am in the process of converting it over to saltwater. My brother has a 75g tank and operates a Rena Xp3 filter and hasn't had any issues. So I was on Ebay and found a really good deal on a new Xp4 rated for a 265g tank. I thinking this will be enough filtration but as far as a protein skimmer I'm not sure. I have read that it is really a good idea to purchase one. Any thoughts and recommendations on a brand/type would be helpful.

Welcome to the forums, isn't the Rena a canister filter?

I'd recommend a sump for all SW tanks, it's really super beneficial. Canister filters are usable but the benefits of a sump largely outweigh those of a canister in terms of filtration, hiding equipment, adding water capacity, having an extra tank to store nuisance inverts/fish, a place to dose additives, a place to put media/etc, the list is long of their benefits.

Yes it is a canister filter. My brother has used one on his 75g SW tank for years with no issues. I do agree the wet/dry sump is the better option. I do have a question on those though. Do all wet/dry sump require a hole in the bottom of the tank? If so, my 100g is glass is it safe to drill that hole or will it affect the integrity of the tank?
