I think I figured out why wrasse are partially insane

From what I have read all wrasse start out life as female. Most males are brighter in color and the wrasse family isn't tank bred as widely as other fish. So my idea is whenever a wrasse is put into a new environment where it can see its reflection for the first time it thinks its in the presence of a very attractive and interested counterpart.

Of course I would need to have a captive bred female to test this theory.

I'm a little confused as to what your theory is?

    Protogynous hermaphrodites, yes.

    Sexually dichromatic, yes.

More like not at all, actually. Broadcast spawners are not something anyone really has a handle on.

Mmm, not exactly. If it's a male, it sees a challenging competitor. If it's a female, it sees a member of it's harem.

Not in the cards anywhere in the relatively near future, I'm afraid.

I believe your theory is a captive bread female would not transition? I don't believe that would be the case at all. Read up on the implications of being protogynous hermaphrodites. You'd have to completely change it's natural instincts for this to hold true.

No my theory is a captive bred female is less likely to do the glass pacing that most wrasse are known to do if/when it makes the transformation into a male.

But I still say the female will transition, and then it's looking at the reflection of a challenging competitor once again.

Unless they are lying someone must have found a way. Yellow Coris Wrasse - Tank Raised - Halichoeres chrysus

quoted the wrong one but I think you get the idea.

Tank raised is very different than tank bred.
