I got my setup used, and there was a lot of extra "stuff" in the deal. I found a nicely shaped piece of branch rock in the mix, and put it in the DT without curing it first. Now four days later, I have a huge outbreak of green fine hair algae on everything. could this rock be the food source for the algae?

    55g, CPR BOT fuge w/PS, 2-T5 48" 1-blue/1-full spct, .0123, 77.8deg, 7 year old system i just got 10 days ago.

Absolutely, more so than it being a coincidence. I will say that it sounds like the tank was on the brink though and the die-off put it over the edge. People who know me from this forum know I am not an ardent fan of water changes to "cure" a situation or problem, in your case however, it would be prudent to do at least a 35% percent water change (don't forget to subtract for rock/substrate). Also, if available, put in a Poly Filter Pad or Pura Filter Pad.
