so basically when i started my tank i thought i knew what i wanted but now a few years later i am upset with some of the choices i made. what is the easiest way to go about changing somewhat big things about your tank? i would love to get rid of my crushed coral and replace it with sand. i would also like to add in a bunch more rock but want it to be stable. i don't want to just stack the rock on top of what is already in there because then it might fall. what is the best thing to use when forming your rocks together and will anything terrible happen if i just start scooping out the crushed coral and replace it with sand? i have no other tank to move my fish to so they will have to be in there while this is all happening. thanks in advance!

I do know if your tank has been set up for a while and you start scooping sand then a lot of stuff gets released and it will kill everything.... Not sure what but I keep reading that everywhere.

Could you simply rearrange your rocks? Add a little here and there?

If your tank if fish only then get some 5 gallon buckets and put your rocks in some with enough water to cover them and the fish in another with a heater and circulation. Clean out the old CC and add in new rinsed sand. You can then add in new rinsed dry rock and restack to your preferred design. Fill the tank about to 2/3 full before adding in the rocks so your live rock stays wet. Get your temperature set and add in your fish and enjoy your new set up.

You can release bacteria that are detrimental to the health of your animals and noxious chemicals also.
