I have had a black ocelleris clownfish for maybe 8 months now. Its a small one, probably about 1 and a half inches. I really want to add a standard orange ocelleris clownfish. Does anyone have any advice on how to do this or if I should even attempt it? I was thinking if I added a second one that was a little bigger I might have more luck but idk. (I know there is another thread thats similar but I dont want to hi-jack that thread)

I would say to go smaller then the one you have now. I have a black and white and added a smaller regular one. There was a little chasing around, but once they got the dominance settled out all was well.

i think u can add it.. but do make sure its bigger than the one you have to prevent some aggression.

The problem with going bigger, is if the one he has is already female and you add another female, its going to be ufc time in there. If you go small it will still be either an unsexed juvenile or a male.

Never add a bigger clown to an existing one. Idk if you know but all clowns are born males. When one becomes the dominant one, it becomes female while the others stay male. If left by themselves, clowns will switch to female. Once female, they can never switch back and having two females in the same tank will usually start WW3. Clowns should either be added at the same time or add a smaller one to the existing one to prevent having two females. I started with a regular ocellaris and then added a smaller b&w one. There was some aggression at first, as to be expected, and then things settled down. Best of luck to you.

Not to pick at straws, but there actually born with no sex, they then turn male, and to female from there. Depending on if a female is already present. But yes your right once female they will not go back to male.

Yeah, you're right. But none immediately go female from my understanding, correct? There's always that step to male in there so I've always found it easier to explain to people that they start male.

Yes from what I have read, they turn male first, then female. So for the most part its safe to say babies are male. I just thought it was interesting that they have no sex when born.
