Well it depends on the size of the tank. His tank I would go with three.

If you get three females there will be a lot more fighting. The mean one might be dominant or might just be mean. LOL Tough call. You'll have to decide if you want her, or three other females. But be prepared for more fighting since they are all the same sex.

I think 3 would be fine but I personally have 4 in my 135 tank, 1 male and 3 females. The male likes to push the female around a bit when I'm feeding them, other than that they get along well and usually hang out together in the same side of the tank. As far as feeding goes my females eat pretty much anything but the male is a picky sob and mostly eats mysis and brine shrimp, I feed mine twice a day and all are fat and healthy and have grown considerably since I have had them.

I have one in my tank. They are picky eaters. Mine will only eat frozen mysis, which is fine. The rest of the fish go nuts for it. Best if luck. I love mine.

I keep 3 carberryi anthias and they show no aggression at all. 3 was the magic number for them, more and they all would fight (at least what I have seen at the store) and they school basically nonstop. Supplement with selcon and cyclopeeze and feed at least 3 times a day in smaller amounts and you should be set. For like 30 bucks you can get a "hatch and feed" kit for live baby brine shrimp on a "drip" and they will do immensely better IME.

Wow! Thanks for all your replies! I just got home from work and have caught up on the responses.

I guess my next questions are as follows:

Are anthias jumpers? If so what should I do to ensure they do not go carpet surfing? (my tank is an open top)

If I were to purchase some lyretails, would it be best to purchase a harem of 4, a trio, a pair, or a single fish?

As of now, all the fish in the store are females. If I were to purchase just one fish, would it stay a female or would it morph into a male? If I were to purchase multiples, how long would it take for dominance to morph a female into a male?

Thanks in advance for your time and your help.

I do have one more question. What should I use to ensure the anthias don't jump out of my tank? I currently have an open top system but don't want to add something that reduce my PAR from my lights. Do you have any suggestions?
