i'm trying to find the best way to add carbon to my reef tank.any ideas are welcome.i also might be rebuilding my 29 gallon sump to a 30 gallon long for my 55 gallon display tank.i'm looking to maybe add carbon without adding another motor or motor driven device.i have a prizim skimmer that i might upgrade to the delux model with carbon attachment but i want to get other ideas 1st.it would be nice to maybe find a way to add it to the new sump that i can change out loose carbon every month.i know i can toss bags of carbon in,but i'd rather the water passed through it than around.ty for any ideas, paul.

If you have a filter sock, place a bag of carbon in the sock, if not get a two little fishys carbon reactor.

I like OceanParadise's idea of a phosban reactor (from 2 little fishies). The only issue with that is that you need a small pump to operate it (like a maxijet 400) - very inexpensive, and IMO very worth it. Then you can use it for carbon if you want, or a phosphate remover if you need it.

Gatorade bottle = cheapest phosban reactor ever! - Nano-Reef.com Forums

A cheap, DIY method to make a reactor out of a gatorade bottle. Basically you just attach a pump or powerhead to hose, and run it through the bottle. Cut some holes in the cap, throw in some media, and viola - it's reactor time! I use this method in my setup, and while it does look a little janky, if you have a sump you can't really see it anyhow. You can also modify the setup and make it look nicer, use a different bottle, etc. but this method does work rather well to pump water through the carbon.

I use a $2 mesh draw string bag half filled with carbon placed on top of a filter pad where both my overflows drain too.

The best way to add carbon is in a reactor at a rate of 0.5g per litre/0.5g per 0.3 US gallon. If you don't want to buy a reactor or build a DIY one. You could add it passively in a filter sock in your sump at double the rate (1g per litre/1g per 0.3 US gallon) and ideally aggitate it daily to remove any detritus build up.
Before you add the carbon to your system; heat up some RO water in the microwave for a minute then add the carbon and leave for about a minute before adding to your sump or reactor.

This is what im about to do.just got the reactor in the other day..I already have GFO in one with a "Y" coming off the return..im going to add another "Y" to feed both ractors..I dony see that much of a loss from the return since the reactors use only a little flow...HTH..
