Its not only if they die they release toxins, its if they get stressed also. too big of a risk for my tastes.

A kole tang is a great fish to have for many reasons.

    I have 1 in my 90g, along with a 6" sailfin tang.

Not only do they stay smaller (for a tang), they are a ctenochaetus, or a bristle toothed tang and will eat pretty much all pest algae that can rear its ugly head. These are great janitors, and make a great reef citizen.

When you buy one, if from a LFS, make sure it eats well and that it's mouth is how it is supposed to be. A non eating Ctenochaetus, or one with a damaged mouth usually won't live very long.

If you have the money to drop, check out a Chevron Tang. They are good for all the reasons horkn listed, plus according to these sites they eat detritus!

Also, note how beautiful they are:

I like chevron's, but they only stay that beautiful while they are juveniles. As they mature, they get very dull looking. For 125 dollars or more, these should stay pretty like that even as adults. Plus in a 55g, a chevron will get to be pretty big.

A 2 spot (ctenochaetus Binotatus) bristletooth tang is another nice looking one, around 40 dollars and when it is an adult, it keeps it's nice colors.

I've kept a few tangs in my 120 but my Purple became to territorial over them and I had to take a few of them back to the LFS... I would say Just keep one in there... Makes for a happier fish IMO.
