Try aiming your powerheads at the glass. I personally love the look of very fine sand, but yeah too much flow and its all over the place.

I don't mean to offend you, but you must be doing something wrong. I have a 55 too with fine grained sand and I use to use a modified Maxi Jet 1200 (2400 gph) and a K3 (800 gph) and didn't have any issues with the sand. I now use a Vortech MP40 (running at about 2500 gph) and a K1 (400 gph) aimed directly at the sand. My sand has drifted but it doesn't fly up, and my water is still crystal clear. You should try to raise the power heads up on the sides more and aim at least one at the surface.

IMO, crushed coral is worse b/c it harbors detritus real well and will eventually get clogged with it resulting in a nitrate factory that you can't do anything about unless you remove it.

that will go away over time. My tank would do that for the first couple of months. Just be patient and when you do a water change stir up the very top layer of the sand and siphon it out. Also, if you do not have any corals that need heavy flow point the powerheads up towards the surface.

My tank cleared up in a matter of days. Are you using a protein skimmer?
