bump to someone who has welded acrylic. thickness depends on how big your tank (pressure on walls). I think 1/2 inch is what you will hear is the right thickness but dont take my word for it. did you make your 55g yourself out of acrylic??!!

If it's 6ft, you'll probably want to look into cross bracing as well. I'd imagine the middle of the tank would bow out unless it has some support.

no my 55 is a glass tank my dad mad in the late 70s early 80s lol ...still no leaks!!! ... ive built hob stuff ,overflows and refugiums...small projects like that. i did do some of the building of my 300gal tank though.i figured i would need atleast 1 brace on it... the width looks lik i can accommodate about 36 inches safely and im not sure on what height id want ... max would be 4 ft but i dont think i need to go that high .... or want to for that matter lol that would be a PITA to light

Thickness of acrylic depends on the height of the tank, most of what I have come across says 18"-24" use 1/2", >24" use 3/4", and to make sure it is cell cast acrylic. I'll see if can find some old links I had for you.
