It is a dry heat, yeah right !
Wait until your tank is established for several months before adding any type of star fish. Serpent stars are a better alternative.

A star fish shouldn't enter a tank that's under 1yr old IMO. Most need very large, well established tanks. Their food requirements sometimes difficult to maintain.

+1. If your tank isn't established, then they won't have enough food, and will die within a month or two. I learned this from experience. :-/

    Agree with all the above.

Also, you will need to research the sea star in question. Only a few will even survive in captivity; many have specialized diets that we simply cannot provide and will slowly starve to death. Knowing what they eat in the wild will help tremendously.

WOW!!! wish i read this yesterday. I got a very nice looking orange star fish yesterday from what i believe is a fairly reputable LFS. I was not told that the feeding requirements were so difficult. Anyone wanna school me real quick so that i can try to feed him the proper way? My tank has been established for almost a year and has been remarkably stable.

    Relax!

I have a Choclate Chip Sea Star, got him when my tank was about 6 months old.

When I got a Green star polyp frag, that was growing great, I checked my Dt one morning and freaked out. He was on top on the GSP, and ate most of it!

Into my sump he went, and lives there today! I see him from time to time, he's doing well.

IMHO, no offense to anyone I know very little it seems, but some advice is .... I never feed him anything special, and never have spot feed him, now living only on sponges and detritus in my sump, he's doing fine. My tank is now barely 11 months old.

There's a short 3 min. vid in my sig.

I liked the GSP more than the CC star. OH well

We would need to know the exact species. Can you post a pic?

No offense Todd, but your experience is not the norm. Obviously the CC Star doesn't require special feedings. Many other species do, and in my short time here on 3Reef, I've seen quite a few "melt away" because the owner didn't do their homework until it was too late.

FWIW, most will live an incredibly long time without their special diet. They are slow animals with a slow digestive system, so you do have time to find out what it is and what it eats. :)
