We are experiencing an ice storm here in Oklahoma. Fingers crossed that we don't lose power.

My LFS advised me to have battery operated pumps with air stones for my tanks in case we lose power (no I don't have a generator, yes I know I need one).

However I have had someone tell me that using the airstone is BAD and will create skimmate. They suggest that I should take a bowl, dip it into the tank and empty it back in.

    Thoughts?

Lol, that would be boring...;D Anyway I would recommend you get a 45 minute battery backup like APC - 550VA Battery Back-Up System - Black - BE550G backup&cp=1&lp=4
it should last about 3 times the indicated time on and if you need it for an extended period you can plug, unplug every half hour...

Yep, pretty nasty here in the TX panhandle.
.5-1.0in of ice this AM and now 8+in of snow and still coming down hard

I bought a generator last night ... Lowes was just about sold out of them.
Probably won't need it, but I feel better knowing that I have it...just in case.

Unfortunately I'm going to have to make do with what I have right now. My MINI is buried out in the driveway under a boatload of ice and sleet. No driving for me!

A generator will be purchased as soon as we can afford one. Not only do we have ice storms here, we have tornado season to contend with. We need a generator!

air stone should be fine i had one in with my feeder crabs (saltwater and tons of waste) no skimmate just a real bad salt creep.

    2 side note

1.you can buy a converter for your car much cheaper then a generator you. just run an extension cord inside. its a good idea to have your car running while its being used though.just so your battery doesn't die.

    2. snow is awesome for driving in :)
