Ich and Seahorses

can seahorses or pipefish get ich because i had a scooter blenny in the tank with mine and he got ich ?? what shalst i do???

 

lol i cant afford one so i guess ima have to get some cleaner shrimp? will cleaner wrasse do the same ???

 

I'm not so sure that seahorses will tolerate being cleaned. You might get much better answers to your seahorse questions at one of the specialty forums (Syngnathid.org). As much as I don't like to send folks to other forums, when it comes to seahorses, they need special care and since not many of our members keep them, your questions may not get answered properly.

 

i dont have the seahorses yet ive decided to hold off until i rid my tank of what ever ick might be in there do you know if pipefish are the same i assume so but idk, i dont like to go to other forums either lol this one owns

 

I've not heard of any seahorse or pipefish getting Ich but I've only been keeping them for 3 1/2 yrs at this point.
The pipes and horses are very susceptible to internal parasites, and, very often succumb to bacterial infestations from being kept in closed systems at temperatures above 74°F
It's still possible to have problems below that temp, but above, the chances multiply because the bacteria like vibrio prefer the warmer temperatures to spread and increase their base in the tank.

Well, I hope to God I never make a sarcastic post, at least knowingly.
What I meant by that is that with 3.5 yrs of seahorse keeping, I basically am a beginner compared to the more knowledgeable people on the two best dedicated forums.
Those two forums are helping me out a lot.
At first, I spent a couple of years reading about, and perusing the seahorse forums to learn before I got into things. Then, I jumped in with both feet so to speak, thinking that with my 12 yrs of reefing (at that time), would aid me in my project and keep them under similar to reef conditions.
I mean, after all, I do a lot of unconventional things in my reefing, like keeping seabae anemones, crocea clams and squamosa clams, LPS corals and softies, all under Normal Output fluorescent lighting. (I didn't know it wasn't supposed to be done until I got a computer after I had been doing these things for a number of years)
Well, after losing a number of seahorse and pipefish, I finally realized that the most knowledgeable people on those forums were right and I was wrong.
Now, I still "push the envelope" so to speak, in that I'm raising Reidi fry in densities not recommended and in a manner not recommended, but without the help of those people I wouldn't have gotten this far. With their help, I hope to succeed in raising them to adult.
Following their recommendations doesn't guarantee success, and not following doesn't mean automatic failure, but the percentages are heavily in favour of their methods.
I applaud amcarrig for posting a link to a more knowledgeable site for seahorses, especially in light of her connection to this forum. Because of people like that, more knowledgeable information will be made available to those not knowing about the other seahorse specific forums, and hopefully that will translate into fewer deaths in the seahorse hobby.
I liken it to the doctor who recommends a specialist for you when you have a problem.

 

Having kept h. erectus myself for several years, I know how difficult these animals are to keep and care for and how completely different these animals are from the ones that we keep in our salt/reef tanks. I'm thinking about getting back into horses and if I do, I plan on spending alot of time at that other website reading up on whatever new info I have missed since I stopped keeping them many years ago.

 

well thank you all very much my pipe fish is doin excellent hes eatin like a pig i just put a large amount of copepods in the tank and hes loving them my seahorses will be in my tank by next week, my pet store said it was fine and i trust them because theyve been with me since day 1 of my salt water hobby i thank you all kindly for the information you have provided for me and if you have any suggestions or info you find helpful if you dont mind please let me know thank you all once again if you would like i can post you pictures

 

Please don't put the seahorse in the tank until you've done the procedures outlined in your post on another forum.
The person trying to help you there has a heck of a lot more knowledge on seahorses than any LFS owner or employee as he is a former breeder and exporter of captive bred seahorses in Australia.
