If a tank was infected with Ich and after all the ich infected fish died and say one fish survived and showed no signs of ich for 60 days, is it safe to assume the ich is gone?

Some asked me this question and I said I don't know if the ich is gone or dormant or whatever. To be extremely safe I still recommended quaratine the remaining fish and keep the tank fishless (ich-starving) for 42 days. Was I wrong?

No, quite the opposite. What has been found is that some fish can acquire an immunity to the effects of the parasite and although are infected do not show any of the normally fatal symptoms. What then happens is an often heard story, that goes along the lines of "just got a new fish and all of a sudden it got ICH and died" Often the case is that the tank already has ICH and it just badly infected the new fish.

Quote from this site - http://www.petsforum.com/personal/trevor-jones/marineich.html

" Acquired immunity occurs when the response is specific to the invading organism, which is recognised directly or through antigens (Dickerson and Clarke, 1996). Colorni (1987) first suggested that marine fish could acquire some immunity to C. irritans by surviving several infections. Burgess and Matthews (1995) demonstrated acquired immunity in the thick-lipped mullet, Chelon labrosus. They found that 82% of fish that had been previously exposed to high levels of theronts were immune to a secondary exposure."

Well. It is my GUT feeling and from my scientific calculations that it is true. Ick is in the tank and when i added the new fish, it infested him. No almost to prove it, I have NOT ONE trace of ick on any of the fish that were previously in the tank! I am completly amazed. I find it nearly impossible that every parasite of ick was attached to the infected fish and when I pulled it out it all dies with him....just seem impossible. So I am feeling really lucky that nothing else has it so far

Sorry for all your losses :'(. I have a Purple Tang that had it before. I used this stuff called "Kick-Ich" by Ruby Reef. It's safe for anything in a reef tank. It worked wonders for me.
