    diatoms aquarium - Google Search

Google search : Diatoms - looks like what you've got to me!

Is this a new tank? Did you just add a new piece equipment with plastic in it?

h,mmmm....no experience with clams so not sure if a clam death can contribute to a Diatom bloom . . . . but a bump in hopes that someone else knows . . .

What are your Nitrates, Ammonia, & Phosphates at? The death of your clam may have caused a spike in something, depending on how long it was dead. I had a Linkia star unknowingly rot in my old tank and it caused a cyano outbreak. I would get your params checked and run some GFO to keep Phosph down if that is the case.

I'm not sure diatoms can occur in a year old tank, I may be wrong, but this seems to be some type of nuisance algae or the beginnings of cyano maybe?

Doesn't seem to be hurting anything, but it is ugly, and I've put to much time into this to have to look at

Ammonia spiked is now down to 0 which is where everything else is. I did 2 small WC on top of the weekly, and that got rid of the ammonia reading but this stuff is till here. Would diomotons (not sure of the spelling, and its not in front of me) have the same effect on a test reading that cyno dose? Where it eats the nites and phosphates before it can be measured w/ a test. All readings r 0 but I think thats wrong.

Just added my sump though, though that might be important. Roommates tank dose not have this problem and the same materials were used for both sumps

Did you also add an overflow box? (plastic) or a skimmer (plastic) or new plumbing (potentially plastic)? All of these "new" things can contribute to Diatom blooms . . . .
