Cleaning my tank this week I found this stuff on the back of some mushrooms. It's a bright orange mass that I thought at first was maybe sponge, but upon further inspection the substance is gooey to the touch.

Haven't seen this befor and want to know if anyone has encountered this. Would like to know if I need to remove it befor problems arise.

Yep thats a sponge. I would get rid of it. Sponges aren't always harmless. I once had a sponge smother a colony of green star polyps. They also bother zoas and probably mushrooms too.

Luckily, sponges are easy to get rid of. I would brush it off with a toothbrush or syphon it off. As a more permanent solution, you could point some more flow at the area. Sponges hate flow, they will blow right off.
