    Hi,

Anyone have any idea what this is? It is the strange white coral and it is starting to spread over a small rock that also has a red algae plant growing on it.

    Any ideas?

It is from the phylum Porifera. It is a sponge which is a filter feeder. They require low light with good water flow and usually are good indication if your water parameters are in check as they will die if your water is out of whack!!!!They are good for your tank and should do fine. The main problem that occurs with sponges is the shipping and handling process, as they CAN'T be removed from the water as air gets in the tissue causing it to die off.

Well that's pretty cool! It's good to know that it's a good indication that my levels are ok.

Cheers for your reply, I hope that they continue to grow nicely. :)

I've actually read that air get's lodged in the feeding canals and therefore blocks off food intake so they pretty much starve to death. :tongue4:

Frizza, you should be happy. It's a wonderful way to monitor your tank's health. I have a few that are spreading. Some sponge that grew long spikes to feed, it's kinda ice blue in color. Pretty neat.
