These critters bloomed out of some wonderfully fresh Indonesian liverock I am curing in my BioCube 29 HQI. They are about as big around as your pinky, and maybe an inch and a half tall. The oral disc is greenish, the tentacles are lightly banded, and the stalk is speckled with white dots. They are strongly averse to light. Even a dim flashlight will make them curl up and retreat.

Any help with identification would be greatly appreciated!

Its a Phymanthus sp. or frilly anemones. Mine got real big and split like mad and have blue tips and bright green stripes down their tentacles. They didn't color up until they got bigger.

Mine was as big as my pinky nail and looked like a mushroom when I got it. Now I have over a dozen of them and the largest is fist size. A lfs was selling little bitty ones for a premium; they are going to poop when I bring them a bag of these big colored up ones.

Don't worry they will get use to the light and get big and fat. But watch out, they will sting the crap out of everything.

Wow, thanks. That looks right. I appreciate the fast ID.

Any recommendations? Keep 'em or lose 'em? Will they harm neighboring corals? Kill small fish?

My tank isn't stocked yet, and I'd rather avoid problems than invite them.

I'm in a 29 gallon BioCube, so things are going to be close together. How did you manage yours when they grew?

All I've ever gotten from LR was a stinking common feather duster.... oh and a worm of some type.

Did you purchase the rock online?

    hey no problem.
Personally I love nems, I have a tank full of them. But I try to only keep them in one tank because they will sting everything around them. These ones are very hardy and can really color up. They don't move around too much so you can give them some room and let them do their thing. Then when they split you can spread them around town and ship 'em out to Montana.
