I brought this LR today. I thought I looked it over well in the display tank but this is actually the side of the rock that was hidden. I think I have about 5 aiptasia that vary in size. THere are a ton of what I think are Vermitid snails sp? Some chiton (prob 12) and I saw a few asteria stars.
Please take a look and ID or confirm anything I have mentioned.
Also I know the aiptasia is bad and will dose it soon but what about the other stuff?

Thanks mission! are the snails gonna be a big problem down the road? THis side of the rock is covered with them! Also are the chiton bad? I see that some people add some as a CuC. Is there a good and bad kind?

I glue my vermetids shut. I don't like the web they send out to catch food. They are generally harmless. Other than the web disturbing surrounding corals etc. Chitons I have never looked into.
Here's a link with some general info with in-depth answers as well.

Looks like the Chitons are a welcome guest. Anyone know different? Last night I spotted some sort of hermit crab of some sort in this LR. His chell was kindof trapped in a cavity and he was out of his shell trying to push is shell free! I got a real kick out of it!

I hit the aiptasia with boiling water last night and again this morning. Looks like last night's dose got the big one but the rest were still there this morning so I hit 'em again.
I'll have to see how they look this afternoon.

Some Chitons (fuzzy Chiton) are safe. Other variety are predatory. I'm not an expert at telling them apart.

Peppermint shrimp (once tank is ready for them) will keep aiptasia under control.

Aiptasia, vermetid snails, asteria stars... Might be worth pulling that new LR back out of the tank, nuking it and then tossing it back in as base rock which will eventually re-flourish with live (the good kind). Thats alot of unwanted pests on that LR, and its going to be quite time consuming to try and take care of all those pests. Worst part is that if your attempts fail, than you have some massive spreading ahead of you. Good luck with the good fight.
