    Hi all

taken the plunge into the world of SPS and purchased these 2 corals at weekend

1 was identified as blue staghorn acropora
and the other as a yellow acropora (it has very green polyps)

can anyone on the site confirm the IDs for me please , I have done some web surfing and the hits on both these names, with many different looking corals has confused me (how many different looking blue staghorn corals are there?)

    Steve

Yes, they both appear to be species within the Acropora genus and that will be about the best you can do per an ID as it is impossible to do such an ID from photographs, even experts in the field find it near impossible to ID to the species level with this group.
As far as coloration, its simply that and has no meaning (for an ID) other than allowing others to come up with equaly meaningless names (Superman, Green fart of death, Shield of light and other such nonsense...:) )

    Nice corals by the way.

    Thanks Doc

I have a K3 clone pointed at it - 750 gallons per hour , I know what you mean though as those branches are tight and have many polp cases , which means anything floating around the tank would get caught up on them Ill have to monitor that

    Thank you Divott

Nice acros! I have Joe the Coral, I don't know who came up with that name but I bet someone named Joe!! It's an awesome blue, I have it up near the top of 75g, under 150w 14k mh light bulb, not directly under. A Koralia 3 with a flow director cap on it flows off to the side, not directly on acro, but polyps blow around freely, kind of a chaotic flow it seems to like, not a direct blast from PH.

Fwiw, I have an ORA joe the coral. It's one of my favorites in my tank.

But yeah, those look like some sorts of acropora, and thats th best we can do for now.

Welcome to the heartbreak world of SPS :)

Im still reeling from a acro colony going RTN on me a couple weeks back, keeping it pretty LPS oriented at the moment.
