I bought this from an online store as assorted SPS coral. I've had it now for approx 3 months. Attached please view pictures of this coral in the several stages of a normal day.

This actually looks like a white Sun coral that the polyps aren't quite opening up to me.... doesn't look like any normal SPS... it doesn't really fit any shape/size of how SPS grow etc. If anything it looks more like some weird LPS than an SPS. I really don't know. lol Sorry.

Skeleton is flat with pits, not tubules. It has no interest in brine shrimp, its located near my orange sun which is an agressive feeder. This coral appears to thrive on light. It does not have tentacles on its heads they are all smooth with tiny mouths in the centers. It appears as it accordians its self rather then just stretching. Definatly not a sun.

I completely agree with your statement 'it doesn't really fit any shape/size of how SPS grow etc. If anything it looks more like some weird LPS than an SPS'

Thanks for the input. every possible thought is much appreciated. I have been looking everywhere for sometime. And I am not afraid to be mistaken myself.

This is definitely an LPS, just not sure what it is.

I agree... Not a sun coral then. The fact that it doesn't have any tenticles on the polyps points me in the direction of Acans.... BUT there is no Acan that I know of that the polyps stretch out like in the last pic. The way it is growing onto the LR is the same pattern of some species of acan too... But again, I don't know, just throwing ideas out there lol

Its actually a sawed piece of its skeleton its on. Just hard to see that in the picture. I glued it on a lower ridge of the LR to make it apear how you viewed it.

Ah HA! I think I may have found out what your mystry coral is!! It's a Flowerpot Coral. The reason why it doesn't have any "tenticles" out like a flowerpot usually does is because flowerpots do horrible in captivity! That's why in the 3 months of you having the coral the polyps ahve only extrended to what the last picture is. even the most experienced reef keeper have touble with flowerpot corals. It just haven't been it's happiest in your tank since you have had it, which is why the polyps aren't coming out. Most people that keep these corals say they rarely last about a year. I attached some pictures I have found of flowpot corals that are closed or on their way out. At first I didn't think it was a flowerpot until I read about how crappy they do in captivity which would explain the lack of polyp extention, and when I saw these picture! What do you think? I really do think that it what you have here.
