I have the 29 gal Biocube as well. In the bottom my center chamber is extra live rock. Above the rock I have chaeto, lit by the little jbj magnet nano light set to the alternate light schedule of my display lights. above the chaeto is a little tray that I put a little carbon and filter floss on. that is my whole filter process. seems to be working great. i thought I'd want a skimmer, but so far I don't see the need.

Amphipods usually come in on the rock and/or chaeto. Fish will eat them & it's fine for them.
