I've had 2 losses (my ONLY losses) in the past year due to JUMPERS!!!! I just wanted to know what you all are using as a "screen" to prevent fish from jumping out.

In the past, I didn't put anything over the tank because I thought there should be open space for water to oxygen exchange. But just curious to find out what people are using to prevent jumpers. Thanks!

    Egg crate works well.

build a plexi glass wall about 10"s high around the top of your tank. That should keep all jumpers in the tank. Thats recommended for fire fish if you run an open top.

I also built a Plexi glass top, however mine was just like a glass cover with holes that I drilled for air exchange.

In my opinion, If you are using a skimmer, you need not worry so much about air exchange between the air at the surface of your tank and the rest of the air in the room. The surface area of the millions of bubbles in your skimmer are much greater than the surface area of your tank.

I don't use anything as the air exchange/heat and reduction of light to my corals is greater! I have only had one Pseudochromis jump in four years or so!
I would try egg crate, but my halides would probably melt it!

That hamilton light I got does not run hot. It has a 4" fan on one end blowing thru it. My PCs are hotter underneath then the MHs.

10" high plexiglass cover? That isn't very aesthetic. I'll try the plexiglass with some holes.. or perhaps just the egg crates.. that's simple enough.

Actually surface gas exchange is the largest area for O2 to enter the water. Regardless of skimmer type they actually do not contribute that much to o2 in the tank.

I've never used anything over the tank, but I don't have a hole lot of fish known for jumping

I second this and before I'd cover my tank the fish would have a better chance of walking back into it :) Also the CO'2's are the reason most find their fish dead in the morning at lights on that had looked just fine just a few hrs earlier. And if you use a Ca. Reactor even with off gassing then its almost a sure death sentence to cover the surface .
