So i just upgraded my lighting to 6x54 t5.

I needed to get two more lamps, so i called my LFS that carried Giessman to see if they had the ones i wanted before I drove up there.

He was like, i dont got em right now...but what are you trying to do.

    So i told him.

He claims that its going to be way to much light, and that my LPS will die.

Personally, i dont think that 6x54 over a 75 is all that much. I think its just where it needs to be so that i can keep any SPS... i didnt think that my LPS are going to hate it that much....

So what do you guys think.... am i shooting myself in the foot here? ...God knows i do that enough, im not trying to make things more difficult....

I certainly dont think that its more light than if i had MH's over the tank.... and i KNOW that you MH guys keep alot of LPS....

My LPS are just fine in my 125 with 6 80w T5's over them. I even moved a torch kinda high up in the rockwork (with a slow acclimation of course) and it has been doing great.

He's dead wrong. LPS is some of the most adaptive corals there are. I have a bunch of LPS in my 30 gallon under a 250 watt halide. Just like with any coral it's more about coral placement than how many watts you have over the tank. When you upgrade I would move the ones you can to the bottom and slowly move them up to prevent bleaching.

Should i move my torch down for a while? It would be kinda a pain cause its epoxied....

I was thinking it would be easier to acclimate the whole tank by cutting the light cycle for a while and then upping it slowly. Like 4 hrs a day for a few, then 6, then 8....over the course of a week maybe?

    is it even necessary though?

I have: Orange Torch, maize brain & zoos on the sand, hulk acro, green slimer, montis, caps, hawkins and maybe 1 or two other sps, xenia.... if the mushrooms die, i wouldnt lose any sleep....or the GSP haha

I have a 6bulb t5 fixture over a 55 gallon tank and everything is doing great. I have a couple acropora frags and 3 different kinds of montipora. I also have some favia, torch, frogspawn, and a crocea clam that are doing great too. I don't think putting one over a 75 would hurt anything really.

If the torch is set in place then acclimating the entire tank is the way I would go. one kinda crappy thing is my torch had longer tentacles lower in the tank, but it has 8-9 heads on it so it still looks great up high even tho its a little shorter now.

In defense of your LFS guy, he told his honest opinion even though it would cost him a sale on a rather large item. Kudos to him, I wish more LFS were that honest.

+1 on LPS being fine under the lighting once they become accustomed to it

I have Elegance, Torch, and bubble corals all more or less on sand bed ( shelf rock pieces under them so they are stable) under 6 x 80 watt T5

acclimitisation is a good idea so build up slowly
