Maybe I'm understanding this wrong... are you saying that if you win the lottery they don't give you all the cash in 1 installment but rather in payments?

I know they take like 60% in taxes and what not... which is really already a pain, but they only give you the money you won in payments? That would really infuriate me.

Dude!! That blows!!! It would be like living on allowance all over again! Why? YOu pay the ticket in full when you buy it, right? They should take the taxes and give you all your money so you can do whatever you want with it!
    That's bs :(

I mean they still give you quite the money each month. So you can still buy what you thought you would never buy in your life. However, like if you want to buy a big house or something that requires a lot of money, maybe youll need to wait for a few months before you can get all the money for it.

First off.... my mind went way south when I read that thread title.... couldn't help myself.

From what I understand, some states give you the option of a lump sum or payments. The lump sum is normally a huge cut in overall payment.

Personally, I would build my dream tanks, and then a house around them. Then I would buy the plane that I have always wanted. Then start the business I have always wanted.
Make sure most of my family is set... pay off houses, cars, student loans, etc.

The downfalls are easily done by winning. You have a tendency to overspend and amass more than you can afford or need. No one really needs a 5 million dollar mansion.

Spend your money for enjoyment of life, not to impress.

Very wise! Overspending is a very possible outcome when having so much cash! I remember the first credit card I had.... what a mess! :)

Now I'm buying trips for me and my friends to go around the world and share the experience with them... I think that would be fun ;D

The title was on purpose by the way, I can't blame your mind for going south... that's exactly the hemisphere I was shooting for ;)

If you get a lump sum, you lose 20 to 40 percent of the total winnings. It's lame.

However, if you win a big lottery, like one of the multi-state ones (mega millions?) in my area that's upwards of 100m, you're looking at serious payments. They're spread over 25-ish years. Figure 25 years, for a jackpot advertised at 300m, you're walking away with 200m after taxes over 25 years; that's 8 million per year taxes already paid. Like, WOW lol.

Ah, you forgot about the depressing part - the odds. Mega millions is something like 1 in 170 million for the jackpot. On average, you need to spend all of the money from a given jackpot to hit another jackpot, since it's a $1 ticket.
