Last year a 22 year old cowboy from Mission SD won the biggest PowerBall Jackpot ever. The total was like 285 million. He went home with well over 100 million after taxes. Do any of you really know what that amount of money looks like? I don't but I have a pretty good idea. Here's what he did...
He took care of himself and his family first...finacially
Then he took care of his closest neighbors that had been there for him and his family his whole life.
Then he took care of some unfinished business for the community of Mission...new pool, library, etc.
He still has enough money in the bank to live his life comfortably, for the rest of it.

He invested in the life he knew. That's what I'd do as well, only in a different geographical location. I'd never "work" again but I would do what I love and know for sure. I wouldn't buy a home any more extravagant than what I live in now and my only "treats" would be a huge tank with top of the line equipment, a boat, and a new truck to pull it with. I'd put my mom up in a good home for her last years and pay my sis's, brother/sister in-laws homes off but no more for them.
The biggest investment would be building the biggest aquaculture facility this hobby has ever seen. ;)

There are pitfalls people run into. I would invest it diversely and give myself a 20k vacation twice a year after paying off all debt. Nothing else. People who end up winning the lotto can't handle the lifestyle change, and if they dont hire wealth management specialists, usually end up worse off.

I would first pay off any debts that myself or my very immediate family had. Second I would give myself $150,000 in fun stupid money to get the spending over with. Then I would invest the rest of it and live my life as is for a minimum of 5 years to make some nice gains without spending a dime from the new inheritance. After 5 years begin to live off of the income gained through my investments and make more investments. Things I would look into would be developing neighborhoods, buying huge ranches and creating more eco-friendly cattle ranches, and the rest of the money would split into mutual funds and a large money market fund for the security of investment.
After 5 years I will have such a large and steady income I will be able to live whatever life I cared to with money to boot.

The disadvantages are many. Friends and family that you have not seen in years pop up in your life, wanting to borrow money, your rich right. You will make many enemies because of your wealth, no more going out to the mall, movies, etc.

Ok, here we go. This is something I’ve thought about.

    First I’d get a good financial planner/advisor.

Then I’d get a nice big new/newer house to stay in while I find property to build my dream home. I have a floor plan I’ve drawn up and specs as far as building materials and such (i.e. ICF- Insulated Concrete Form for the structure & solar tiles for the roofing) as well as plans for the landscaping. Of course a nice big reef is included in the plans.

Would buy horses (the land would have to be enough for riding trails J ), a boat for skiing and a yacht and sailboat, motor home, jet skis, snowmobile, new furniture and appliances and such. Crafting/sewing stuff for me, my family & friends who like to do so.

Would pay off my parents house and cars and my sibling’s cars or if paid off then would get them a newer car (not new as the decrease in value is too great and I believe in a hand up not a hand out...and most of my siblings are rather selfish so those I’d not do a lot for anyway...why reward bad behavior?)

I’d buy property and build the apartment/condo complex I designed.

I’d invest most of the money so it’d make more for me and then reinvest a good deal of the profit as well so that the wealth builds (gotta keep up with inflation ;D).

I’d start my own charity to be able to anonymously help peopleI know/or meet.
One of which is an ex friend but I’d do it for her kids. I'd help out the community as well and would donate to other charities as well as be able to go and do some hands on helping...like for habitat for humanity.

I’d help my siblings by buying houses for them to live in and only charging them rent to cover taxes, insurance, some upkeep costs and water, sewer & garbage...which would end up far less than any apartment they could rent and would allow them to save up to buy their own home or if they wanted to buy that one I’d sell it to them @ my cost and not make any profit...might even carry the note but I’d rather not.
I’d also pay off their cars for them and in the case of one brother get him a newer car as his is always breaking down.

My kids would have the same deal as my siblings...and as far as inheritance goes they’d kinda have to earn it by making something of their lives and being good decent people.
As one lottery winner told his kids, I’m paraphrasing here:“It’s my money. If you want some go out and make it” and basically said they’d be lucky to get anything cuz he was gonna have fun and enjoy his life. (he did have a good financial advisor and wasn’t blowing his money though...he just wanted his kids to not be spoiled)

I’d take my sisters and friends out to a girls’ night out once a month or every other month or so.
Pay for a family vacation once a year or just once...depending on the amount won.

Buy a cabin so we’d have a family vacation spot we could all use.

I’d definitely travel as well....there’s so much to see and experience...interesting people and cultures, natural wonders....occasionally pay for a friend or two to come along as most couldn't afford it otherwise and traveling &having new experiences are best when shared.

Yes there are some disadvantages like people who'll pretend to be your friend when they are not, family that will expect stuff from you...but you can learn to read the fake people you meet and as far as family goes I'm far to practical to let thier whiney & greedy sides influence me...I already know and understand who/what they are and just how improtant /unimportant I am to them.

    Sorry for the long post.

P.S I thought of the other sort of cheating as well.....false advertiseing...thought we were getting in on some good gossip...LOL just kidding about the gossip thing...don't like it and is usually wrong and is always just one side of the story.
