is Texas 'holey' rock covered in coralline algae considered 'live rock'? My LFS seems to think so. I was planning on swapping a lot of it out with real live rock, but he's telling me since it's been in there for 4+years it's similar. I thought 'real' live rock is still better because it's way more porous than this heavy 'holey rock'....coralline algae or not. Maybe I should still get rid of half of it and replace with real live rock..?

Real live rock will be better. It offers more surface area for bacteria to colonize and displaces less water making your system volume higher. I always search for the biggest yet lightest pieces of rock when I buy. Not just cuz its cheaper.

coraline algae is not what makes live rock "live". It's the beneficial bacteria that colonizes on the rock that makes it "live".
