So the exciting thing about my tank in the last week are there are lots of things growing in it. unfortunatly I dont think they are all friendly. I identified lots of little whitle things as spiro-something worms with amcarrig's help. I have some type of polyp growing on my live rock and will post pics in the ID section later. Now to my concern. I have about 3 spots of green flowing grass-like algae that I am afraid is green-hair algae. And some more that looks really similar only its maroon/red. any ideas, pics, suggestions?

Do you have a clean up crew?
How long do you leave your lights on?

Horton is right about the hrs of light, just cut them down to 10 then to 8 and see if that makes a difference. Or just get like 5-10 more snails and they will do the trick. I just recently had to buy 20 more snails to help clean up LHA that started to show up. But the best advice that I can give you is to find out whats causing the algae growth in the first place. Expect new tank to go through a number of algae cycles...all do.

Try to pull out as much of hair algae as possible...

Vacuum what cyno you can, increase frequency and amount of water changes for while.

Cut down on food, light, increase flow...

    Get yourself some more hermits.

    Good luck.

    Added Pics

Sorry it took me until now to update the post with pics of the algae, I think the server was down again last night for a while cause I couldn't get on the site. I also added a new tank shot just for fun.

1- green hair? in the center and some of the red stuff down and to the right.
2- cyano? on the crushed coral substrate. It is almost black in color/dark brown.
    3-more maroon hairy stuff.
4-tank shot. I know my LTA is crazy big for this tank. I have a sign up in the LFS to try and sell him for a few bucks.

Normal stuff for your tank to go through. Up the cleanup crew to help stay on top of it (snails, crabs, shrimp, etc). I would try to get on top of things without messing with the lights. Find a good balance of cleaners and the lights shouldn't have to be touched. All tanks have algae in them, it is just a matter of how you manage that algae!

That LTA looks like it is fat and happy!!! and is a very nice looking critter...Keep it till crawling out of tank. By then you will be probably getting a larger one anyway...

    Take sign down...;)
