im gonna use play sand in my 55 gallon aquarium when i get it. i think it will only increase my diatom bloom from what i have researched. does anyone have any first hand experience? ive looked around and it seems some have used it long term with no ill affects.

dont have the money to get the araganite. researched the paly sand and it seemed like it would work. i doubt oolite or araganite is gonna be 3.53 dollars for 40 lbs either.

Well if it doesn't work, you'll know it. But good luck, keep us posted.

yea from what ive heard it just keeps the diatom bloom goiung for a while onger because of the silicates. idk if oceanparadise is on here lately but this is what he used in his tank.

If I were you I would not use play sand, Lots of the times playsand contain lots of metals that would kill saltwater fish including copper, zinc, iron etc.

I forget who, but theres atleast two people on here with large tanks (greater then 55) and they swear buy it and said they had no blooms. Theres just something you have to look out for in the sand you purchase. Maybe theyll chyme in

I think you are really risking it, nothing in this hobby is cheap. I don't know anyone who used silicate based sand on this site. Some people have said they used "play" sand but it was actually carbonate based. Really though, why risk it for $20?
