Why are you slamming the stores, you know half the newbies will walk into a store and say they want a sailfin."yeah my tanks like 150 gallons" when come to find out it's a 55. Also you have visited a lot of lfs lately, do you think it's fair to say they're in it just for the buck? Be fair Daniel, you have been on bith sides!

I agree with you Daniel. But also I feel its more up to the buyer to look into his livestock purchase before buying. If people did things properly they would have read books and did research. I think most people have made spontaneous purchases of something they just had to have without doing the research. I bought a starfish one time based on the fact the lfs employee said they did well in aquariums, eat whatever it would find. It did neither and it died. I felt so guilty. From what I have seen most lfs dont have highly trained icythiologists working in them. I do agree they want to make a buck but not at the expense of having the animals they sell die. I feel the employees of a lot of lfs are just misinformed, and pass that wealth of knowledge on to others. They would rather look like they know what they are talking about than say,"give me a second and let me look it up." The lfs I go to has a lot of books and if I have a question about something I will go and find the book that I need and look it up. The owner has also done this several times for me when researching fish.

I shoulda said some and I'll edit that post. It's not all of them by a long shot. Also, I know that the store where I worked did everything possible to do the right thing as far as knowing their clients systems before sending them home with something. I just think that should be the store standard.

The store where I worked has done this very thing. If we didn't know something or something had us confused, we go back and jump on the computer and try to find an answer for them.

My .02, Tangs are everywhere, especially hippo and yellow tangs. I think what happens is people go into local fish stores and see the striking beautiful coloring of the yellow tang and that is one of the things that attract them to the hobby. Because you see these guys all over it gives you a false sense that they must be easy fish to keep after all my local pet store has 30 of them!

It is up to the buyer to do the research, I won't lie we bought the 55 with the goal of nemo, dory and a yellow tang. Before the tank was even done cycling we had discovered this was a really bad plan (thanks to all of you again) however, here in town we have 2 "big box" pet stores and two Salt only stores. The chains will tell you, yep thats fine want me to catch those fish? The salt stores say, nope bad idea heres your options. So it's kind of 50/50 if the buyer is honest with the store the store should explain the pros and cons of the purchase. BUT the buyer ultimately should do at least some research on thier own.

Again, just my .02 as a new hobbiest ;D

    NEMO,
sure did not help the hobby. A Morish Idol, P.Puffer and shrimp in a 10 gal? Why do you think people can do the things they want to try.:furious2:
