Never broke a heater due to leaving it plugged in, but definitely dropped a few on the tile.

I haven't burnt up any heaters, but when I was a kid, I went to microwave a rice crispy's treat for 60 seconds, but entered 60 minutes instead, forgot about it, and left the house on my bike.

When I got back home 3-4 hours later the smoke and stench in the house was horrendous. That didn't go over to well with the parents, nearly burning down the house hahaha.

Funny I did that with a hot pocket... the smell of burning didn't want to leave the microwave and the hot pocket was this black hokey puck, rather funny thing but man it smelled soooo bad.

After a few years I can say I haven't broken or torched anything with a heater, though I had a marineland stealth recalled because they had the opportunity to explode... and with an acrylic tank I didn't want to take the risk. (I know glass would have shattered and made a big mess but my beautiful acrylic tank would have been scratched to the point of no return from a heater explosion.)

    LOL

At a company I was a CFO for, I put a sign on the microwave. It stated, "You may microwave popcorn. However, you MUST stand there and watch it. If I smell burned popcorn, you WILL be written up and you must surrender your first-born".

i was using a heater to bring my water change jug up to temp. I took it out and sat it on my hardwood floor (thinking i had unplugged it to cool). needless to say there is a large black burn on the wood!

I have another hobby-- listening to an emergency scanner. You'd be surprised at how many times someone has reported a house fire because they saw smoke coming from a neighbors house, and it turned out to be unattended food on the stove.
