Im THE coral killer....

Yea $$$ hobby....I have fuge setup and it would be beneficial in that the macroalgae in it would consume the excessive nitrates/phos that are before being consumed by the nuisance algae accumulating in the tank...in that it would have nothing to feed on and the nuisance algae would eventually starve....Now I found found the macroalgae to be very helpful in dealing with redslime (because of its ability to consume phosphates)...Does the red algae remove easily if hit by a power head will it blow off?? if so it is redslime not coralline....now I have read that redslime can remove oxygen from the water and suffocate corals....

 

Well i set it up in late june/early july: would say its cycled by now.. Also, would u say i might have too much filtration (IF their even is such a thing)?

If it matters, i didnt get the protein skimmer until january... Also, doesnt seem to skim much from my tank (this product works well on other tanks, but on mine, it doesnt seem to get much in the collection cup at all- maybe 1/4 of the cup gets full of green liguid once per week... )

 

Nah, this stuff wont even scrub off- its collecting on the intakes of the filters even..

Thats definitely coralline than....Im running out of ideas as to why ur corals keep dying because all your parameters are in check...how long do you leave your lights on for??

 

You may want to try some star polyps first. They are very hardy & grow well.

 

Im running out of ideas too :[. I mean heck, im even running purigen (phosphate absorber thing) and biozyme.

My lights are on from 10 to 10 (1/2 hour between).v

And i actually got some star polyps ($10 frag) that been doing well actually. I got it the day i got the Xenia. The Xenia was condensed due to transport, expanded extremely well for 2 days, then slowly shriveled. And now... No longer pulsating...

 

forgive me if this seems stupid - but are you 1005 sure your corals are dying? many of the species you describe are species that are known to retract and shed skin layers - and when I was a newbie many years ago I was not aware of this behaviour and threw away what was probably a perfectly healthy finger and toadstool coral - becuase it had closed down and was shedding skin and

Im willing to bet your corals are dying because you dont have adequate lighting.

If you have been using tap water most house pipes are copper and you could have a bit of copper in your tank. Only time I have had a redslime problem is when it covered the coral and robed it of light. I would just manualy remove red slime and that will help cure that problem. Red slime is probably getting out of hand cause of the tap water and once what ever it is feeding on gets use up then your red slime problem will disapear.
Don't worry about your fuge unless you have a tank over 55 gal. I found with bigger tanks it is harder to get the right gas exchange without fuge. I would find a better source of calicum though. I have used the purple up and found that b-ionic and other sources work better but that is just me. If you just now changed to ro I would give it some time maybe a few months then try to raise corals then. any wich way good luck.
