My son said I'd be posting shortly..it just took me awhile to figure out how to do it. I'm just starting with a 45 gallon tall tank...I'd like a beautiful reef tank with as much coral as I can have. (and a Nemo and Dory for one grandson..and other TBD).

I have 65# of live rock (40# from somebody in SF who was going out of business and 25# from somebody in Omaha taking down their tank). I'm not sure how much of it is actually "live" other than being in somebody's tank before. I also have 20#'s of LS from PetSmart and another 20# of regular sand. I just got the tank set up last Sunday and tested the water last night.
    Ammonia - 0
    Nitrite -0
    Nitrate - 5
pH - 8.8 ( used 30 g of RO water to start along with about 5 or 8 gallons of seed water from some of the LR).

Not sure if my tank has/is cycling or what's happening yet with the above reading....

Thanks for all the information here !!

Its too early to see any NH3 or No2 yet, you just started. Dont put anything in the tank until 12 weeks have passed by. After the 12 weeks test your water again.

    welcome to the 3reef,
Sounds like your on your way, now for the waiting to finnish this is the hard part:) I think that if you want then you could introduce a small damsel to your tank in another two or three weeks as your probably about to see a jump in your ammonia anytime soon with the introduction of all that live rock.after it starts to level/drop then get a hardy little damsel.
Oh and by the way a Dory is a fish best suited to a 55gl+ tank they dont do too super in smallish tanks.
Dont forget to keep your youngan online doing the investigating as this is time well spent!!!

A hippo tang (Dory) should be kept in bare minimum of 75 gallons IMO. If a yellow tamg technically shouldnt be in a 55, than a hippo must go farther.
