If you haven't built a tank before my recommendation would be to build the stand and buy the tank. Tie the stand into the wall framing. If you don't want to spend the money on a new tank, scour Craig's List. You will be able to find a used glass tank for less than you would be able to build one.

if your trying to go cheap, id build a wall around the tank, not put a hole in my wall. theres a huge price jump after 180gallons cause of the thicker glass, id buy the tank if its 100g, theres always that little name tag at the bottom of the tank so you can blame someone if the tank fails. i wouldnt go cheap with anything though, cuz in the aquarium world, you do get what you pay for

We've done a couple in wall installs. Honestly, to do it right and to do it cheap do not go hand in hand with in-wall systems. There are a lot of factors that you may not have considered (ie: proper ventilation for the filter room, properly installed electrical, proper structural supports.

For in-walls, I always recommend a steel frame over a wooden structure, it not necessary, but it makes my live from a maintenance point of vie a lot easier ;p

For the aquarium, decide on a size, and have your local lfs or a good service company to built the support structure and the tank itself to the dimensions you like.

My (semi-realistic) dream is to build a ~240 gal 8'x2'x2' acrylic tank.
Figure I should put down my unrealistic dream too... A floor to ceiling wall tank! Get out the scuba gear!
