    Doesn't really help lower them, but removes stuff ( fish poo/food etc) that would break down and become nitrates, so yes it helps to slow their production, which makes them easier for you to lower via WCs.

    I agree...get the longer/shallower tank. Much better for fish, as well as aquascaping.

    Definitely get a good skimmer.
