I have a 10 gallon reef tank. I am using a simple box filter ( one which hangs on the back of the tank ) & a small skimmer, for filtration & water movement. I can't afford more &, even if I could, there is not much room for more.

Some of my corals need a current around them.

My question is...................... will the greater the distance between the water flowing out of the filter & the surface of the water increase the current near the bottom of the tank or will there be more flow if I keep the tank topped off ?

    Thanks.

It would, but that would also add noise and splash creating or salt creep. Generally speaking those filters you described produce enough flow in a 10 gallon tank.

Where the salt residue starts to form on your lighting, pumps etc

When salt water splashes salt is dispersed into the air like an aerosol spray – it dries and re-crystallizes back to its solid form. Air bubbles being released naturally from reef tanks (natural process of gas exchange) the aerosol effect happens – this is why you see salt forming an various surfaces on and round your tank.

lol ! I take for granted some times that we use certain terms or hobby phrases that everyone understands – not necessarily true tho and I need to remind myself of this.

One thing I suspect we can all agree on, call it what you will - salt creep sucks. Hmm...sounds like a good tee-shirt :)

that would be a good shirt! But sorry for hijacking the post...back to your question i wouldnt worry about adding more flow. the filter and all should be enough. you might want to think about changing your aquascaping to maximize flow
