Ok I finally got an RO/DI unit from BRS, and I'm gonna start my 20 gallon long fowlr tank. Would it be ok to mix my first batch of saltwater in the display tank or should I just do it in a separate container? I was only thinking about doing this for my initial batch of mix and then mix in a separate container for water changes.

That is fine as long as no sand and what not :)

i've always mixed salt water right in the tank on initial start up. i fill it up to 3/4, mix in the salt, put in the sand, let that settle, put in the rock, then fill the rest of the tank with premixed salt water.

My last set up was done exactly the same as above

50 gallons of RODI added - almost the full bag of salt mix
allowed to mix with power head for 48 hours

    then added rock
    then added sand
and topped up over next couple of days with 2 5 gallon mixes of salt done in plastic bucket
