I would also be curious about the rates for not just flat out killing the organisms but the exposure that would say, make a significant percentage no longer viable. Damage like that could be caused by some structural defect created by UV like loss of attachment or genetic damage making it unable to reproduce. UV could also attenuate organisms so they don't flat out die for quite a while.

Just some thoughts on the subject.

I understand what you mean. However, what I don't get is that they say to kill parasites with the Turbo 6x, you will need to run the water through it at 110 GPH.
However, they say you need a pump of at least 200gph to run the unit...

    http://www.coralifeproducts.com/Files/Product/turbotwist-instructions.pdf

    so how does that work?
They also say the UV sterilizer can tolerate a gph from 200 to 400gph...
So does that mean they admit it can not kill parasite??

The fact that they say it needs a pump of 200gph really confuses me..

I need help please, I really want to get rid of ich before it is too late!

    Thank you!

Basically at the flow rates (and thus dosage) listed by Coralife will kill some parasites, but ich is a tough one and at the flow rates listed it will not come close to killing it.

Again, I recommend calling Coralife and asking them what slower flow rate is required to reach a dosage necessary to kill ich. Then ask them if running at that flow rate will hurt the unit.

    OR

Buy the Aqua UV unit I listed.

Bottom line: You need a big UV sterilizer relative to your tank size to kill ich

I hate to be the coralife basher here...but I have found in general, that their products are inferior, their directions are confusing, and their customer support is lacking. This coming from someone that has invested a lot of money in Coralife products (early on) and ultimtely ended up replacing everything I ever had by coralife.

I'd go with the UV that rocketman suggested.

ok, I am starting to understand now. Basically, I will get the 120gph pump with the coral life 6x turbotwist, which will give a UV exposure of 45,000UUws/cm (per single pass through the UV sterilizer) which is not enough to kill ich since it need 280 000 uWs/cm (per single pass through the UV sterilizer).

However, this set up should kill quite a bit of bacterias and even some viruses per single pass.

Might sound like a stupid question, but can we divide the "resistance" of the bacterias by the numbers of times they passes through the UV sterilizer?
    To make myself clearer:
If a bacteria has a resitance of 280 000 uws per pass through my UV sterilizer at 45 000 uWs, will it be killed if it passes 5 to 6 times through this UV set-up (280000/45000=5.45)??????

That will be my last question!
    Thank you guys!

In quick enough succession? Theoretically yes, but that doesn't happen. If you want to get from 45000 uWs/cm2 to, say, 90,000, you basically have to drop the flow by 50%. It's not quite a linear equation, but close enough at most flow rates.

Thanks, just to end this thread, I finally sent back the turbo-twist and got a TMC Vecton UV 600.
It looks like if you want a good UV sterilizer, it is either go big or go home (except if you just want to kill algae)

Please find below this GREAT article about this matter. Everyone who wants a UV sterilizer should read it:

I will check out that link soon - thanks - what are your impressions of the TMC Vecton UV 600 so far?
