FWIW, I used that Zinnser BIn primer alone on my canopy I made 5 years ago for my 35g reef. It looked great even after taking that tank down last August. Another guy in my local club used a white top coat of the same brand over the BIN primer on his 120g, and it looks perfect after being up for over a year.

The nice thing about this stuff is that it is cheap, and available at HD. A marine epoxy would work jsut fine, but it would be a lot more $$.

Go to any West Marine store (a national chain) and they will have this epoxy. I am sure you can find any boat specialty store and they will have it, or can get this.

Any two part epoxy paint would be your BEST bet. I would prefer to use epoxy paints as opposed to stains etc. Just make sure to follow the directions when mixing the two part epoxies and pay close attention to the directions when it has you "catalize" the paint. Best of luck to ya and don't forget the pics when it's all finished :)

Just an update on this for anyone who does a search on it in the future. I'm going with Spar Varnish which you can at any Lowes as it was also recomended by some of my lfs's.

the best thing to use is a 2 part epoxy, its totally water proof and wount break down from uv rays or heat. you can find a polyester resin at any home depot or west marine. I used west system which is an epoxy resin, its stronger then a polyester resin but its also a lot more expensive. I work at west marine so it not as pricey for me. the rest of my stand is built using marine paint.

I guess I'm to simple minded I always just used high gloss bright white latex exterior house paint , Last hood I used this on lasted 15 yrs everywhere the wood was not painted the pine rotted :) The high gloss bright white also intensifies the light out put of lamps for the par lovers among us .
