I haven't used either, but I think the general consensus is to use as few chemicals and additives as possible. Have you tried the natural method of reducing nitrates?

yea.....they were over 200....been doing water changes every 2-3 days....got them down to 20 now. Just want a little help the rest of the way...they seem to be stuck at 20.

Also....should I be adding anything? I dont add a thing to my tank right now. What about the Kent Marine Essential Elements at least?

right now I only have FOWLER...but moving to soft corals once my nitrates are good!

What would be fine...the IO additives or the Kent Essential Elements...or both?

    Any others suggested?

a refugium would lower nitrates and phosphates and keep them low.

I am totally working on that...I just got a 48'' long tank to use as a sump and installed a few partitions, one for skimmer and a nice big area for refugium. I am waiting for a glass drill bit to be delivered and then I can start that project....but will be a couple weeks at least I bet!

i agree that you should avoid chemicals for reducing nitrate. a fuge would be great. a happy medium might be some chemipure, or something like that. chemipure is what got me over the 20ppm hump to zero. now i dont even run it all the time like a couple days every couple weeks in my converted HOB.

Ok...I will hold off on all chemicals....I havent added any thus far and got them down quite a bit.

My sump/fuge still wont be ready for at least another week...I am waiting on parts in the mail...drill bit for the glass and some fittings!

Once thats in I am hoping like you said...most troubles should go away!

    Thanks!
