According to what one rep at a local specialty aquarium store told me, you can add Instant ocean salt to your RO water and it's ready to go in the tank as soon as the temp matches your tank (assuming you've added enough mix to achieve your desired SG).

He said you don't have to wait 24hrs. I confirmed that on the Drs. Foster Smith site but it's contrary to what I've heard many times.

What do you guys suggest or practice? I'm still learning what I'm doing so I'm not sure and thought I'd ask.

    Thanks in advance!

I use Instant Ocean Salt and learned the hard way that you have to wait the 24 hours. I mixed up a few gallons, checked the sg (it was good), and then put it straight into my tank. The next day my clowns died and my tank sg had dropped. So, ever since I have let is sit at least 24 hours.

Let it age a couple of days and then add it.

ummm you dont have to wait 24hrs, sorry but if you added it and fish died then theres somethign else goign on. When im in a rush I mix and let sit for 30 mins and put into tank. Never had any problems doing that.

You know, I always did that too. I always had slight variations in my sg when doing this. Nothing major, like .001. Never really thought much of it, but once my fish died, I started waiting the 24 hr period and my sg has been spot on ever since. Maybe it wasn't the salt mix, idk, but someone else on here told me to wait the 24 hours and never had any problems since.

Its best to let the water aerate for 24 hours and check salinity then before adding it to the tank.

Yeah as long as your not doing a HUGE amount there shouldn't be an issue.
