    No one has mentioned temp yet. Refractometers (good ones) are temp adjusted so depending on the water temp of the mixed water you will get different readings if you don't use a "good" refractometer to check it.

    I have only used Isntant Ocean, but I do have to admit, I have not really watched what I am doing. I know when I mix water, it's ~35 gallons at a time and my scoops are not always the same. I have an old power head that I drop into the bucket and let that mix things over night then the next day I adjust as needed.

    few weeks I am due for another change, so I will have to pay attention this time.
