I was wondering what would happen if your tank was broken during a party or some how. Would normal home owners insurance cover the damages? Anyone have any idea on this? I am not sure but I would assume if my 90 gallon tank broke even tho its on tile the carpet would need to be replaced! Just asking to see if I should add flood insurance.

I think also your floors are covered from the water damage but not the actual tank

If my tank was broken at a party, the person who did it would need health insurance!

Dude, I don't think so. Not unless you have a special rider. Look into it. I believe aquariums are on the exception list. I read it here in one of these threads recently. I will have to call my carrier and see as well. John.

Being a FL resident and having purchased home owner's insurance, especially with hurricaines and floods and such, I know that here in FL; your homeowners or renters insurance does NOT cover floods. You need specific flood insurance for that.

As for what pharmrjohn said about it being excluded, that might be true too. Just mention when shopping for ins. that you have a tank, and they'll fill you in.

I am pretty sure about this one -

Most Homeowners Insurance Policies (HO3) will cover "Accidental discharge" or "Overflows" of Water. This means that if your tank breaks, everything damaged because of the water will be covered (Less your deductible).

The tank itself will NOT be covered nor will the fish (Animals) or any inhabitants of the tank.

So, pretty much - anything UNDER the tank. The furniture, the floor, carpet, walls, couch, draperies etc...

This would NOT be Labeled a Flood for insurance purposes.

That said, every policy is different so simply read the coverages section and the exclusions section. If you are still unsure then ask your broker and hope he is not a moron.;D

I've spoken with my agent about it and adding an insurance policy to cover the tank breaking is unbeleivibly expensive, so much that if I had a tank bust once every 5yrs It'd be cheaper for me to just out of pocket the expenses rather than pay the monthly premium and co-pay + the hassle of fighting over the costs of replacement with the insurance company.
Having worked for one in the past I can honestly say read the fine print and even if you know an attorney or legal assistant buy them dinner and have them look it over as well, insurance companies #1 goal is to be profitable not help their clients.

If I were you, I'd read that policy cover to cover.
