I'm new to the hobby and just setup my first salt water tank. I have 72g overflow with a 20g sump. I filled it up for the first time and everything seems to be working well except the intake is slurping. Is there a way to stop that?

    welcome to the forum!

I think the "slurping" you hear is from the overflow draining into the sump, right? If that's it, you usually have to find the "sweet spot" that matches the rate of the water draining down into the sump with the water being pumped back into tank from your return pump. I have a valve on my Mag return pump and I had to play with it a bit to achieve the quietest setting. I'm not sure if you have a valve on your return line but you should consider it if the noise bothers you.

I'd put a peice of airline tubing in the drain, that did it for me. Theres a vid on youtube somewhere, I'll see if I can find it.

Thank you, This is quite the endevour

Yes that is exactly what is happening. Unfortunaltely I dont have a value on my return pump. It seems like the overflow is draining into the sump fast then the pump can return it to the tank but I bought a more than powerful pump. If I reduce the hole size will that reduce the rate through the overflow?

The slurping may stop on its own. It is not uncommon for the new pipes to do this. Once it is broken in the noise should stop.8)

This does the trick for all 4 down flow tubes of my 3 overflows.
