Is live rock only for saltwater tanks? Or can it be fresh water as well?

I use to use gravel from established fresh tanks to cycle new tanks but the live rock is just not the same amount of stuff.

So, I'm sorry if I misunderstood, but can they be in freshwater or no?

When I kept freshwater fish, Mostly Ciclids, I always had tons(well not tons, but lots) of rock that I used to aqua scape. 55 Gallon used stacked from top to bottom, caves ect...

Back then I didn't have to pay big bucks for it either, everything was collected from outback of our house, I only had to carry it in.

The fish loved it, lots of places to hide, and Ciclids are almost impossible to kill... And so colorful

As for the filtration value, I'm sure it added somewhat but the rocks I used to use were not very porous like the lr used for salt water, so it seems like the surface area would be much less.

If you do use rock laying around the house though, just make sure you wash them very good before use, rinse, rinse and rinse some more...

What type of tank do you have/ Fish?

I have a 36 gallon corner tank. Beautiful it is.

Unfortunately...Due to a massive outbreak of Ich and Finrot..I lost all my fish except for 2, my marble molly and my upside-down cat fish...Devastating. I DID have an Iri Shark, Redtailed shark, reg. Pleco, Clown pleco, Butterfly, Betta, and 2 pictus catfish. I tried so hard to save them all. Now I'm deciding what to do. Whether I want to do a pleco/catfish tank or just a community.
